Zoe McDonald is a self-taught artist with a deep love for experimenting across mediums, though watercolour remains her first and most intuitive language. Its fluidity and transparency come naturally to her, allowing light, colour, and emotion to work together on the paper in an organic and expressive way. Her work is rooted in detailed, photorealistic rendering, brought to life through bright, cheerful, and vibrant colour palettes.
Zoe is drawn to portraiture and the quiet beauty found in light as it falls and shines across a face or surface. Alongside portraits, she explores themes of nature, including birds and flowers, celebrating their delicacy, movement, and presence. Light plays a central role in her work, guiding mood, form, and atmosphere.
In 2024, her work was selected in the AGAC Artigallery Competition, placing in the top 25, and was exhibited in Klerksdorp, South Africa. In 2025, she was honoured to be one of 276 artists accepted into the Women in Watercolor 6th International Competition, chosen from over 1,730 entries across 56 countries, receiving an Honourable Mention. The same year, she advanced to the second round of the Rust-en-Vrede Portrait Awards.
Through her work, Zoe seeks to capture moments of stillness and light, creating images that feel intimate, luminous, and quietly observed.
