About me
MariAguarela is the artistic name that reflects the artist’s journey through pigment, water and brushstrokes. She was born in Guimarães (a beautiful city in northern Portugal) where she currently lives and works. She holds a degree in Sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (FBAUP) and works as a Visual Arts teacher. In 2023, she found in watercolor her main medium of artistic exploration, a space for connection, harmony, and self-expression. Guided by authenticity, beauty, and the simplicity of everyday life, her artwork reflects a creative and sensitive approach to art and life.
What captivates her in Watercolor is the leading role of water, the transparency and intensity of color, and the delicate balance required to harmonize pigments on the surface. Emphasizing transparency, chromatic harmony and expressive brushstrokes, her paintings reflects an emotional and contemporary approach of the technical challenges of this medium. Moving between figurative subjects, her artworks record real landscapes, daily life moments or expressive portraits, always rooted in beauty of the `scene_atmosphere´.

MariAguarela has participated in several international watercolor events and exhibitions, including IWM England, AAAI Córdoba, Accademia Internazionale dell’ Acquarello (Frascati, Italy), IWS India and IMWA America, receiving honorable mentions. She also exhibits in public spaces and creates commissioned artworks.
