I have studied fine arts, but only discovered watercolor recently. In the past, I have participated in national and international art exhibitions, and have delivered art techniques workshops. More recently I have been involved in IWS Portugal exhibitions and plein air events.
I live in Portugal, on the edge of a small town, where the suburban coexists and gradually takes over the natural and historical spaces. These places, full of meaning and cultural signs, are often forgotten or unknown to the people that live here. Uncharted prehistorical burial sites, covered up roman roads, a closed palace next to a bus stop, centuries old farms on sale to build apartment buildings.
I try to paint these places in plein air, to capture their memory as they go through time and before they disappear. The light comes to place, to eye, to brain, through nerve, out from hand, to watercolor and rests in paper. This is the delicate magic that inspires me.
I also paint watercolor portraits. In the series Creatura, particular people are portraid in their bare humanness. They are alone in the page, lit under a strong white light and deployed of any cultural signs as clothes or hairstyle. Who are we, invisible beings who look out into the world from inside our skin?
