I have been drawing and painting for many years, having trained first as a textile artist. At present, I enjoy using acrylic paint along with charcoal and pastel. One of my main subject areas is old carpentry tools and other rusty, discarded mechanical objects. I have a very large collection of these and find them fascinating to draw. They are very evocative of past working lives and their different surfaces and markings reflect how they were used and handled. Many people enjoy looking at my work because it generates conversations about family history and former times.
I sometimes incorporate natural form into this work, to draw attention to similarities in surface, texture, colour and form. I enjoy exploring unusual compositions and juxtapositions and providing surprises to the viewer.
