About me

In the family in which Jan Peeters (1963) grew up, there was always plenty of room for art, history, photography and atmosphere. His interest in (military) history brought Jan into contact with artists such as Koekkoek, Staring, Hoynck van Papendrecht and Poortvliet. Lady Butler's 'Scotland Forever' evoked in him the desire to paint horses.

He presented his drawings to the mounted police in Utrecht, where he learned to be self-critical and to perfect his work. "Make sure it's right, because a horseman sees it immediately," he was told as standard.

Because of the disqualification of realism in the eighties, Peeters renounced an art education and ended up in journalism. This came to an end in 2019 after 34 years due to reorganization. He decided to pursue a career as a professional horse painter. When the Covid lockdowns paralyzed all equestrian events, he made a virtue of necessity by also painting landscapes, sea, river and cityscapes.

"Whereas as a journalist you are often concerned with the dark sides of life, as an artist you focus on the unparalleled beauty of creation, whether it is a landscape, a sun-drenched street or the light in a forge.

We live in gloomy times. In the stories that matter, Sam tells Frodo when despair is near, people still manage to stand their ground. They hold on to the good in this world, the beautiful. That in which you can dream away for a while, but at the same time is also reality. I hope to contribute to that with my work."
