Programmer by day, artist by night
Carla Froitzheim (b. 1959) is a passionate artist in Leverkusen, Germany, who specialises in expressive landscapes and abstract art, painting in watercolor and mixed media. She is also an urban sketcher with a preference for rural motifs, industrial areas and abandoned places.
Her artistic journey began in the 1990s with digital photomontages. With her professional background as import manager and print designer in a computer company and later as a web developer she used the tools of her daily work to create imaginary photo worlds in her leisure time.
In the 2000s Carla began painting with acrylics on canvas. Her first abstract works where influenced by technical themes and focused on textures and strong color contrasts. She started studying in evening and weekend courses about art theory as well as working with a variety of materials.
In 2018 Carla fell in love with watercolor. Initially she used watercolor only for coloring her urban sketches but she quickly discovered the advantages of using watercolor also for her bigger paintings.
Carla finds inspiration in the beauty of nature, both when traveling with her partner in their motorhome and on short trips to the surrounding area on her bike. But she also loves the harsh beauty of run-down industrial areas, abandoned buildings, rusty objects and material textures.
Since 2007 she shares a gallery space with some fellow artists in the community of an artist colony in Solingen.
