Jane Coventry (b1963, Canada) is a third age emerging artist living in Guelph Ontario. Jane’s watercolour paintings, mostly representational and expressionistic in style, reflect her relationship with the natural environment surrounding her home in southern Ontario. Working from her own photos, Jane’s current project explores her relationship with the two rivers that converge close to her home and the wildlife these rivers support within an urban environment. A recent artist residency in Nova Scotia has inspired a separate body of work, through which Jane is exploring the visual interpretation of pivotal moments during this experience on a remote island in the Bay of Fundy.
Jane has a life-long interest in both the visual arts and nature and she studied both fine arts and biological sciences at the University of Guelph in the 1980s. Although she chose to follow a career in science, Jane maintained her interest in drawing and painting. She continued to participate in local art classes and workshops while living in England and in Canada. A disabling illness ended Jane’s science career prematurely in her 50s, however, Jane’s practice of making art not only helped her adjust to her new circumstances, but ultimately created opportunities to focus her available energies toward developing a new identity as an emerging artist.
Jane finds great value in meeting and collaborating with other artists. She is a member of the Guelph Arts Council, attends local critique nights and participates in groups who meet regularly to produce art in shared space. Jane has exhibited in group shows at Silence, 2019; Evergreen Centre, 2024; Artbar, 2024. She has paintings in private collections in the UK, the USA, and Canada.
